Some children work on their family farm (with parents who did not receive an education), others have been trafficked in from neighbouring countries and do not even know the local language, are paid nothing, are forced to use chemicals and dangerous tools that they have no training for.
Quality education is key to finding a better future for children in the cocoa growing regions in West Africa. As Aarti Kapoor (one of the top child labour consultants) says “When children are in school, we know where they are – they are not involved in child labour that is going to stop their education”. Children in school learn social skills, math skills to help them budget for their farms, learn how to read instructions on fertilisers and machines, grow skills on digital platforms to assist their communication with the world. Children in schools have a chance to create a better future for themselves.
